Colts' Defense vs Patriots' Offense
The Colts put the bend but don't break
philosophy to the test last Sunday, allowing Buffalo to enter the red zone three times in
the first half. The Bills, who until Sunday had not mustered even a semblance of a running
game, ran over around and through the men in blue. They amassed 170 yards rushing, nearly
double their per game average. Holes were big and tackles were sloppy.
But credit where credit
is due. Rookie CB David Macklin made a great play on Eric Moulds to punch the ball out of
the waiting hands of Eric Moulds to prevent a touchdown. Rookie LB Marcus Washington
sacked QB Rob Johnson on a crucial play which knocked the Bills out of field goal range.
And the defenseive line, in general, generated a great surge late in the fourth quarter
while the game still hung in the balance.
Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe
is coming off a 4 touchdown, 260 yard game versus Denver. The biggest concern for the
Patriots' offense this season has been the sloppy play of the offensive line. Bledsoe has
been running for his life in most games. Likewise, without consistent play from the
o-line, it is impossible to establish a credible running attack. This puts additional
pressure on the QB to make plays in obvious passing situations. Unless the offensive line
improves, Bledsoe is in for a long season.
If the Colts can key on
the run and force Beldsoe to count on his unreliable line for protection, we have a good
chance of keeping the Patriots offense in check and forcing turnovers throughout the game.
