Colts' Offense vs Patriots' Defense
The Buffalo Bills did an excellent job
of keeping Edgerrin James in check throughout most of the game. James finished with only
60 yards rushing. That being said, James' impact on the game was still very profound. Late
in the game, he caught a perfectly thrown ball from Peyton Manning on a crucial 3rd and
12. And with less than a minute, James sprung loose on a draw play for 12 yards to help
set up Mike Vanderjagt's 45 yard game winning field goal.
This in no way is meant
to diminish Manning's stand out performance on the game winning drive. Instead, it is
meant to higlight how difficult it is to contain let alone stop this offense. Even when
you hold them down statistically, they can still beat you. They don't get discouraged,
they are relentless. And you must play them tough every down of every possession or you
will get beat.
This is what the
Patriots face this week. The Colts are averaging 411 yards total offense per game (310
passing, 101 on the ground). The Patriots do have a stout defense, anchored by all pro
cornerbacks Ty Law and Lawyer Malloy. They are giving up over 100 yard per game rushing
and over 200 passing. Since the Patriots' strength is in their secondary, look for the
Colts to give James the opportunity to take control of the game on the ground.
