Colts' Defense vs Patriots' Offense
The defense, while
lackluster in the first half against Seattle, came to life in the
second half causing three turnovers and helping the Colts to build and
solidify their lead at crucial moments in the game. The key to
success against the Patriots is much the same as last week. Stop the
run and force the offense to become one dimensional.
The
Colts have made a habit of making mediocre running backs look like all
stars in recent years. The Patriots' Kevin Faulk is no exception. Two
weeks ago he routinely ran for 7-8 yards on first down, giving the
Patriots plenty of room to maneuver on second and third
downs.
Asking
Drew Bledsoe to beat us may sound like a bad idea, considering the
fact that he is 8-1 over his career versus the Colts. In fact, in
those games he's thrown 19 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. He
must mark his calendar each year and salivate at the prospect of
playing the Colts!
Well,
not this time, bub. As the Jets have shown as recently as last week,
if you can get to Bledsoe and hit him early and often, he begins to
make bad decisions in the passing game. If the Colts can force
the Pats into obvious longer yardage passing situations by clamping
down on the run, the defensive line can begin to apply the necessary
knockdowns.
Given
the Colts erratic play thus far and Bledsoe's penchant for raising his
game when playing the Colts, this matchup is too close to call. I
would like to think that the crowd will be the x factor, disrupting
the Patriots offense and pumping up the Colts D.
