Colts' Special Team vs Jets' Special Teams
The Colts
kick coverage has put additional pressure on the defense by giving
opposing offenses excellent field position. The defense does NOT need
to be playing with a shortened field! Discipline is watchword. Many
returners are bringing out kickoffs that are several yards deep in the
end zone. It seems as though the Colts coverage unit lets up slightly
when they see the ball sail into the endzone rather than running all
out regardless. Instead of putting the team farther in the hole, the
returns have been consistently past the 20 yard line. Added emphasis
on this aspect of special teams could actually alleviate pressure on
the defense by pinning a team as far back in its own territory as
possible.
Likewise,
our kick returners could give our offense a short field to work with.
Last week, Terrence Wilkins showed signs of the brilliance returning
kicks that won him a roster spot last year. Consistency is again the
key. If Wilkins makes better decisions returning punts and kickoffs,
he can give our squad an extra edge.
No
one should fault Mike Vanderjagt for missing the potential game tying
field goal from 59 yards last week. If the offense had done its job
effectively, they would have put Vanderjagt in a position to succeed.
As it stands, our kicking game is very strong and could give us an
advantage in a close game.
