Colts' Defense vs Bills' Offense
Until the Colt
defense proves that it can stop a team at ANY point in the game, life
will be hard and games will be long for the men in blue. A quick
glance at last weeks numbers. Jets total offense: 491 yards. That's
right almost 500 yards of offense! Curtis Martin alone accounted for
211 rushing. Once the Jets established the run, Vinny Testaverde was
able to drop back without pressure and pick the Colts zone defense
apart.
One
of the most confounding things to this admittedly amateur fan is this:
why do the colts blitz the cornerbacks or safeties from out wide in
short yardage situations when the other cornerbacks play soft
coverage? Let take a typical Colt corner blitz situation this season.
3rd and 4. The Colts send Tyrone Poole on a blitz from the right side,
Jason Belser shifts to cover Poole's assignment but plays 5
yards off as does Jeff Burris on the left side. The result: QB sees
the blitz coming since Poole has so much ground to cover just to get
to the QB let alone make a play. Having read the blitz, the QB
immediately shortens his drop back and throws to his hit receiver, one
of the wide receivers, who is open since the cornerbacks are running
up to cover. I can count well over 10+ third down situations where
this blitz has been called and the opponent has converted. That's 10
drives which might have been stopped if the Colts' defensive scheme
didn't allow such easy completions.
I do
not doubt that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio knows a lot about
defensive schemes than me. But what is abundantly clear to those of us
in the stands is that this particular group of players is not well
suited to this scheme. It is certainly fair to say that the Colts may
well need a new group of players to execute it
consistently.
Until
the Colts defense shows even a glimmer of life for 60 full minutes,
the advantage will go to whomever the Colts play.
