Colts Defense vs Chiefs Offense
The Colts have addressed their key
weakness in the off season: defense. The team is faster and stronger than last year.
Middle linebacker Rob Morris will be a key player in the Colts success this season. Free
agent Bernard Holsey should add much needed depth to an already stout defensive line.
Other defensive draft picks Marcus Washington
(LB) and David Macklin (CB) will have the oportunity to learn and make plays from back up
positions.
Since many of the
crucial defensive starters for the Colts did not have the chance to play together as a
unit in the preseason due to minor injuries, continuity may be an issue for this game.
They may give up an early big play or important third down as a result. As the game
progresses, I expect the defense to settle down and play well.
The largest area of
improvement for the Colts this season, I predict, will be in turnovers. The added team
speed will result in more interceptions and fumble recoveries this year, giving our
offense the chance to score on the shortened field more often. This additional weapon will
help the Colts put teams away. In close games, a single turnover could be the
difference between victory and defeat.
The Chiefs present the
Colts with a balanced attack, centered around the play of their all star Tight End, Tony
Gonzalez. It's not a fancy offense, but its perennially productive. This is a result of
good fundamental coaching and disciplined play. The Colts cannot afford to give up big
plays to this grind-it-out style offense if they hope to win. The Colts may struggle
early, and as a result, I think the Chiefs, playing at home, will have the edge.
