Colts Offense vs Chiefs Defense
The 1999 Colts set a new standard of
excellence. They scored early and often and were responsible for several defensive
coordinator's sleepless nights, I'm sure. The key to their success was balance. The
phenomenal athletic abilities of Edgerrin James running, coupled with the intelligence and
accurate passes of Peyton Manning, made it difficult to for defenses to close off both
forms of attack on any given down. If the Colts are to continue to improve, a key will be
in re-establishing this balance and exploiting defensive breakdowns that result from it.
Deception will be the
watchword for the Colts. No one in the NFL is better at the play action fake than Manning
and no team (with the possible exception of the Rams) has the luxury of gamebreaking
players at wide receiver and running back. While the Chiefs possess a stalwart
defensive line and a relentless run defense and pass rush, if the Colts execute their
offense to the best of their abilities, think there isn't a team in the league that can
stop them. We'll see how close they are to the well oiled machine of last year soon
enough! While there may be some rust, the advantage still falls clearly to the Colts.
