Colts' Defense vs Jaguars' Offense

There are plenty of questions left unanswered after the Raiders mounted a 24 point 3rd quarter to storm back into the game two weeks ago. The most pressing question would seem to be where on Earth had our pass rush gone? Though the Colts coverage often forced Raiders QB to bring the ball down and try to run, a lack of any semblance of pressure allowed him to run effectively all day long. Collectively the team has 1 sack.  Our blitzes are being picked up with ease and the front four are not getting the aggressive push that helped generate chaos in the backfield last year. Hopefully the return of Mark Thomas to the line up after a knee sprain will bring a fresh set of legs and veteran savvy into the mix. Thomas is known primarily for his skills as a pass rusher, so we may look to him for added pressure against the Jags.

Jacksonville has had its own set of troubles with training camp injuries to stand out players, but they still present the Colts with a formidable challenge. Fred Taylor, their star running back, will make his return Monday night. Look for him to try to bust through the Colts' defensive line early and often. Much like the Colts, their potent running game is balanced by an aggressive and accurate passer in Mark Brunell.  Brunell is not afraid to run and make plays if the coverage is good, so the Colts must stay honest. The Colts at this stage of the season are very much a work in progress and as a result the advantage has to go to the Jaguars. Are the Colts capable of stepping up and playing with the Jags? Yes. It remains to be seen if they can do it consistently, especially in crucial situations. Let's hope the Colts pass this test.
