Fourth and Short

Very short. Welcome to the Horseshoe, the home for Colts haiku. Football is a game of simple grace and power, grit and glory unleashed in small explosions. It's poetry in motion. Fast forward, that is. The 'Shoe doesn't need pages of stat-crunching analysis to find the essence of the game.

17 weeks. 17 syllables. That's all we need.  Beat that, ESPN.

Each year the 'Shoe also predicts winners for the full slate of NFL games. Jim Conway put the 'Shoe in its place last season. This year, he returns to defend his title.

The score: Up by 3!  Horseshoe 100/160  Jim Conway 97/160    See this week's predictions

This week's game: Colts vs. Broncos   Sunday  11/23  8:30pm  Mile High Stadium

Colts Haiku

Big D on Sunday
Didn't fly in from Dallas.
It's here in In-D.

So big, yet so fast.
Defies the laws of physics,
Our man, Dwight Freeney.

Read your Hemmingway.
Ask not for whom the post tolls,
It tolls for Vandy.

For three full quarters,
Lackluster offense can't score.
Fourth, flood gates open.

Six hundred catches
In one hundred two games.
Marvin sets the pace.

Colts commit to run
Edge starts slow, finishes strong,
Keeps the D honest.

Peyton works magic.
The prestidigitator
Of the play-action fake.

Next week in Denver,
If Broncos like mile high air
Younger Colts can too.

Submissions

I welcome your submissions. They are loads of fun to write. I am using the 5-7-5 form, meaning the haiku should consist of three lines, the first line being five syllables long, the second being seven syllables, and the third five.  Submit haiku here
