Colts' Special Team vs Bears' Special Teams

The Colts' special teams suffered one major breakdown versus Detroit. And it almost cost them the game. Punt returner Desmond Howard streaked down the sidelines n the third quarter with only the end zone in sight. Or so he thought. At the last possible moment, Hunter Smith lowered his shoulder and angled Howard out of bounds at the 2 yard line! Not only did this force the Lions offense to score, but on third down the defense forced a James Stewart fumble and nullified the Detroit attack.

While our kickers continue to dominate the league statistically, a single breakdown on special teams can often turn the tide of a game. Surprisingly, return man Terrence Wilkins has yet to break through with any large gains. Whether this is the result of poor blocking or Terrence not running north and south, this is an area where the Colts can definitely improve.

That being said, the Bears special teams unit is adequate but nothing more. Veteran P Louie Aguiar has been brought in to replace the injured Brent Bartholomew. K Paul Edinger has made 9/12 field goals. If the game is close, the Colts have the personnel to make big plays.
