Colts' Offense vs Jets' Defense
The Colts offense
nearly pulled off a miracle last Sunday. It would be nice to compare
it to the Jets Monday Night Miracle versus Miami, but this was a game
against a team which they should have beaten, not a tough division
rival in a tie for first place. It is safe to say that the Colts have
the weapons to score lots of point in a short amount of time in any
given game. However, the offense has shown several chinks in its
armor.
Turnovers
and penalties have been a source of concern from day one. The Colts
have turned the ball over at least once in 8 of 9 games. Last Sunday,
Manning's interception that was run back for a TD proved to be the
decisive score. And late in the game, a forced fumble by Manning
stopped a last minute rally to tie the game with a field goal. Please
do not misunderstand, this is NOT a call for Kelly Holcomb at the
helm. We like Kelly right where he is, clipboard in hand, ball cap on
head, pacing the sidelines. In such a short time we fans have come to
expect such great things of Manning, that we can forget he is a mere
mortal, capable of making mistakes. I trust that he will come into the
Jets game focused and ready to prove it with another great
performance.
Penalties
have also plagued the Colts. The offensive line has at least one
false start and one holding penalty in each game. Marvin Harrison was
called twice for illegal blocks last week. Ken Dilger single
handedly killed an offensive drive in the first half with two
penalties in three plays. Again, like the defense, what is at issue is
focus. The team's attention to detail seems to wax and wane throughout
the game. Such penalties can often dictate the outcome of a game,
especially in a close one versus a tough opponent.
The
Jets are a stingy physical team that loves to hit hard. Statistically
they rank in the upper third of the NFL (13th), but you can throw out
statistics when these two teams play. It will be a dogfight, the Jets
not giving any ground. The Colts will have to stay aggressive with
their formidable arsenal of weapons.
This
is not a fire drill. The Colts' offense is #2 in the NFL. They are
doing ALOT of things right. Champions, though, don't settle for good
enough. They continue to strive to become better.
